INTERVENTIONS WITH STREET CHILDREN

Mostly, people tend to believe that the children living in the streets of Kisumu are orphans and don’t have families. But it is true that some of them are partial or total orphans and only a few of them are homeless.
Those who are homeless live in children homes since they cannot trace their homes because of mental challenges, deafness, dampness and therefore they are unable to communicate. Statistics say that there are no adults living with their biological children in the streets and therefore there are no street families.

We often believe that these children have no homes but 98% have living relatives and homes. Children run from home due to a number of factors including family cantered issues and child centered issues. The family centered issues include; Polygamy in the families force most of the children flee from home due to mistreating and discrimination from the parents. Lack of parental love which is a core factor in the society, children require parental love to help in bonding, when this lacks children find it hard to fit in the family and there opt to run away from home in such of the parental love.

Pre mature marriage also leads children into the streets because when a woman is married before she matures up, she may not have that knowledge about handling children.Work related parental separation leads children to the streets because children look out for the gap left by the parent that is far from home. In certain occasions some of the parents abuse some children sexually ie the various cases heard recently being fathers raping their children. Children get frightened  and live in fear when not used to violence and they tend to run to where they think peace can be found.

Child centric issues that lead children to the streets include; desire for freedom, where children feel that when they are away from home they will have the freedom they desire. Peer influence from close friends, problems in school and mental instability.
To reduce the number of these children in these streets, people should not engage the street children in labor such as those lorries collecting garbage who hire the street children during loading of the garbage. When this is done, they will not have money to buy food or sniffing glue, life will therefore get hard for them and they will leave the streets  for their homes
