When you hear of the word Love what comes in mind? Is being in love the best feeling? Does being in love give you authority over your partner? Love as initiated by God was meant to be of mutual trust and understanding among partners.
Various types of relationships exist among University students which incorporate friend with benefits relationship which is when both of you are friends, not dating but there is sexual advantage, on-and-off relationship where you fight, walk away but later end up in the relationship all over again since you cannot stay away from each other. Toxic relationship, which is most common among University students. In this kind of relationship love is not mutual, one partner is abusive emotionally, physically or even both.

Recently, a couple of cases have been reported among campus students. Sharon Mmbene a student at Egerton University was stabbed by her boyfriend but succumbed to the injuries after the boyfriend accused her of being unfaithful. Zachariah Ndigwa a graduate at Maseno University was killed by his girlfriend who accused her of being in another relationship.

A couple of factors contribute to this animosity i.e. Peer pressure among the campus students for example pressure to be in relationship with the so called “sponsors”, rise in drug abuse within the institutions, social media influence where there is an increase in the use of social media among the University students. Most students fetch relationship advice from the internet which later ends up in violence.

To prevent occurrence of such cases teenagers should seek advice from peer counselors in the institutions on matters relationships and always ask for help if caught between the abusive relationships, always be sharp in identifying signs of abuse in the relationship. Additionally, walk away from the abusive relationship before things get out of hand.
