The standard gauge railway was a long term vision and one of the greatest achievements to the nation as a whole. The main aim of the standard gauge railway was to ease the cost of transportation and make it efficient for the investors and the locals.

However, the development of the standard gauge railway was a downfall to a couple of sectors under the transportation industry in the country. In Mombasa, the transport industry forms one of the main forms of income for the residents and the county economic circle.

Truck driving being a main means of transporting the goods from the ports and from the industries such as Bamburi cement and many others was the most affected due to the introduction of the standard gauge railway as a means of transporting goods of which most investors consider as effective and reliable for its speed hence fast delivery to their clients.

Before the introduction and standard gauge railway being effected according to tuko news at least 95 percent of cargo was ferried by road but as per now the highest percentage has been taken by the standard gauge railway.

Denis Ombok, the Kenya transport authority chief executive stated that about 50,000 truck drivers have so far lost their jobs to the standard gauge railway. These layoffs have seen the county government of Mombasa loose about 17 billion Kenya shillings in revenue after the government declared standard gauge railway as one of the means of transporting goods and other transportation services in a cheaper and more effective manner.
