In Kenya, Coronavirus has been a trend since it was reported to originate from Wuhan city in China killing many people and causing panic to other continents. Recently, an incident of a Chinese airline landing at JKIA with 239 Chinese on board caused panic and leaving a lot of unanswered questions among Kenyans.
How enlightened are people about Coronavirus? Well, a good number of people have a sneak pic of Covid 19 as per the information shared via the social media, personal research over the internet and information they get from the media houses through television and radio. However, a good number of people are not in a position to access the social media, television/radio or undertake research due to poverty or other related reasons.
Musa, a shopkeeper in Bombolulu estate in Mombasa during an interview said that the term Coronavirus is a vocabulary he had not come across yet since most of the people around him have no access to radio/television due to their low living standards, for those who have the information he added give information shallowly because they do not have proper exposure. For others the term “it not here yet I do not need to know more” has been a response when asked of what they know about it.
Despite the disease (CORONAVIRUS) being an uncommon term in the minds of many, some say that people need to take a step of fetching information about it. Additionally, the government should create forums to enlighten Kenyans both in the rural and urban areas about the causes, symptoms and the safety measures to be taken.
